Susan Oliver was born in New York City in 1932. Her parents have her name Charlotte Gercke. She studied drama and later trained at New York City’s neighborhood playhouse. She appeared on Broadway and in lots of 1950s television shows. A couple of repeating drama series they had back then were Studio 57 and the United States Steel Hours.

Later, she moved to Los Angeles and appeared on many shows like The Millionaire, Waggon Train, and Father Knows Best. She appeared in a film called The Green Eyed Blonde in 1957 and The Gene Krupa Story in 1959. Later in the 1960s, she appeared on Bonanza, 77 Sunset Strips, The Fugitive, Route 66, and Dr. Kildair.

During this time, she also appeared in the films Your Cheatin Heart, and The Disorderly Orderly with Jerry Lewis. The Andy Griffith show was one of her best appearances. She really charmed Andy and Barney. They were falling all over each other to get close to her. She was really attractive and sort of the girl back in those days. One of her famous roles was as Vena, the green girl, in the episode of Star Trek called The Cage.

Famous for her appearance as a green Orion dancing girl, Susan is still remembered as the powerful personality of the industry.

However, acting wasn’t the only real thing that she wanted to do. She also wanted to work behind the camera and be a director. Eventually, she directed the episode of Mash, and Trapper John MD. But back in those days, it was hard for a woman to try and make a big career out of directing.

The most heartbreaking ,and wrenching incident that Susan Oliver experienced was her miscarriage from her union with Jack. She was four months pregnant. She later disclosed that the loss of their unborn child was the most distressing event of her life. This was a major reason for their breakup.

Susan was looking for a promising partner and a life filled with love and companionship. As the months passed, she met director Dirk Wayne Summer in 1962. They were spotted holding hand during filming. Both Susan and Dirk had confirmed their relationship by appearing in the public together.

Before this relationship, it was reported that Susan dated many actors of industries and business men. Later, it was confirmed that the dating news was rumour, and she was single for many years.

Susan and Dirk was one of the Hollywood’s greatest couple in 1960s. But little did she know that her journey into marriage would lead her into the darkest side. After living together for many years, Susan and Dirk decided to breakup. The reason was unknown as Susan wanted to keep everything private about her love life.

After breaking up with Dirk, she was never caught limelight with other love affairs. For a while, she focus on directing as a distraction. She worked hard, and as a result She recognised as one of the original 19 women accepted into the prestigious American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women (DWW). The road of success was far from smooth and despite her efforts and undeniable talent, she faced the harsh reality of the Industry’s resistance and sexism.

Oliver was one of the first female directors in Hollywood and paved the way for others to enter the industry. She is known for her attention to detail and ability to work with actors. She had a knack for bringing out the best in her cast and crew.

However, her personal life was not as smooth as her career. Her uncontrollable addiction cost her everything. Her personal life was fulfilled by both successes and struggles. She has had several relationships throughout her life but has never tied the knot with any one of them. She struggled with alcoholism and later underwent treatment for her failing health in the 1970s.

Due to alcoholism and her heterosexual relationships, she was not valued and was perceived to be unsuitable for becoming a mother. Her health began to decline dramatically over the next several years.

Unfortunately, Susan Oliver was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in early 1990. She was unable to survive colorectal cancer. She died in May 1990, which was really tragic and heartbreaking for her fans. She was only 58 years old and had so much more to offer in the world of acting and directing.

As happy as she seemed, it was probably known among her close friends that she was depressed. She wasn’t happy with her life of fame and she turned down the offer to have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. She was a determined woman and passionate about her work. She is remembered as a wonderful lady who clearly wanted to leave an impact on the world through her work.
